By a bipartisan vote of 81-17, the Senate yesterday passed the "Every Child Achieves Act of 2015," revising the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). This measure authorizes a program of competitive grants to local education agencies "to improve (1) the quality of American history, civics, and government education ... and (2) the quality of teaching American history, civics, and government in elementary schools and secondary schools, including the teaching of traditional American history," first announced on April 7.

A conference committee will now attempt to resolve the differences between the Every Child Achieves Act and the House of Representatives' "Student Success Act," passed last week by a 218-213 partisan vote. There is no mention of programs or funding for history or social studies education in the House version.
