NEH Institute - Social Movements and Reform in Industrializing America: The Lowell Experience

The Tsongas Industrial History Center (TIHC), an education partnership of UMass Lowell and Lowell National Historical Park, serves about 55,000 students and teachers each year through highly engaging interdisciplinary school programs and teacher institutes in historic Lowell, Massachusetts.

The TIHC has received funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities to offer two Summer Institutes for teachers in 2018. Participants in these week-long workshops will actively explore the topic “Social Movements and Reform in Industrializing America: The Lowell Experience.” Teachers receive a $1200 stipend if they complete all requirements, including creating lessons that address local curriculum standards. Teachers also receive up to 46 professional development points and may register and pay for graduate credit from UMass Lowell. 

We welcome applications from your state, particularly from teachers who teach U.S. history or and/or use an interdisciplinary approach that integrates history with language arts, literature, science and technology, and mathematics. Using teaching resources provided by the Center, a team of teachers from your district could create a unit of study for the whole grade.
